What is Shelfcast?

Shelfcast helps you decide what to buy from your suppliers, and when. It reads your products, stock and recent sales from Shopify, works out how fast each product sells, and suggests how many to reorder so you don’t run out before the next delivery arrives.

It runs inside your Shopify admin. There’s nothing to log in to separately, and your products, locations and stock levels stay in Shopify. Shelfcast reads them, and changes stock in Shopify only when you place, receive, cancel or close a purchase order, or complete a stock count.

Suppliers and their terms. Keep a list of the businesses you buy from, and record each product’s supplier SKU, cost, minimum order quantity and pack size. → Add your suppliers

Reorder suggestions. The Reorder page lists what to order now, most urgent first, rounded up to each supplier’s minimum and whole packs. On the Growth and Pro plans, suggestions come from a sales forecast that allows for seasonality and skips the days a product was out of stock. On Starter, they come from reorder points you set. → Reorder suggestions

Purchase orders. Create them by hand, or on Growth and Pro, turn selected suggestions into one draft per supplier in a click. Email them to your supplier with a printable copy and a CSV of the lines. → Create a purchase order

Receiving. When a delivery arrives, type the quantities or scan barcodes. Stock goes straight into Shopify at the location the order was for, without overwriting sales made meanwhile. → Receive stock

Barcode labels. On Growth and Pro, print a label for each unit you received, on a label printer roll or Avery 5160 sheets. → Print barcode labels

Stock counts. Count a location, a vendor or a supplier, on a computer or a phone, and apply the differences to Shopify when you’re done. → Run a stock count

Inventory history. One list of every stock change made in Shelfcast, plus every change to available stock made anywhere else in Shopify. → Read your inventory history

Import and export. Bring suppliers, purchase orders and adjustment history over from Stocky or a spreadsheet, and download your data as CSV files whenever you like. → Moving from Stocky

It’s worth being clear about the edges, so you know where to turn instead:

  • No stock transfers. Move stock between locations in Shopify. The changes appear in Shelfcast’s history with the source Shopify and the reason Other.
  • No forecasts per location. Forecasts and suggestions cover your whole store, across every active location. You choose where each purchase order is delivered.
  • No manual adjustments. To write off damaged or lost stock, change the quantity in Shopify, or run a stock count.
  • No low-stock emails or alerts. Check the Reorder page, or the To reorder count on Home.
  • No reports or charts. Home shows a few counts and the deliveries on their way, and each product page shows twelve months of sales. For sales and inventory reports, use Shopify’s own.
  • No landed cost. You can add freight, duties and other costs to a purchase order’s total, but they aren’t spread across unit costs, and Shelfcast never changes product costs in Shopify.
  • No accounting connection. There’s no QuickBooks or Xero sync. You can export purchase orders as a CSV file.
  • No Shopify POS tile. Sales made in POS still count toward forecasts, and stock changes made in POS appear in your history.

Shelfcast is in English.

These cover most of the app — the glossary has the rest.

Supplier — a business you buy from, which you add to Shelfcast. Vendor is different: it’s the vendor field on your Shopify products. You can use it to link all of one vendor’s products to a supplier at once.

Available — Shopify’s sellable quantity. Shelfcast adds it up across your active locations.

Incoming — units still to arrive on your Shelfcast purchase orders that have been marked as ordered.

Daily demand — how many of a product Shelfcast expects you to sell each day.

Lead time — the days from placing an order with a supplier to it arriving.

If you’ve just installed Shelfcast, read install and first sync, then work through your setup checklist.
